Hebburn Town VS North Ferriby
By Dan Tomlinson
North Ferriby were defeated 2-0 by new Northern Premier League leaders Hebburn Town on Tuesday night. The Villagers had to play two thirds of the game with ten men after Josh Morrall’s red card, with second half goals coming for Amar Purewal and Olly Martin.
The game was a fierce battle for large parts. However, Hebburn capitalised on a Ferriby error to take the lead and they soon doubled it after a scramble in the penalty area. The away side struggled to pose a threat in response, succumbing to their fourth defeat of the league season.
The contest started in free flowing fashion. It was a competitive outing with both teams tactically astute. Lewis Exall was called into action early on and he made a sequence of fine saves to deny Hebburn.
In an entertaining first-half, Ferriby had a penalty shout following a long Josh Dennett throw but the referee wasn’t interested despite the protests. Hebburn were also convinced they had the ball over the line after a scramble from a corner but not in the view of the officials.
Hebburn continued to press and they got some reward as Morrall’s loose challenge saw the Ferriby left back sent off. The resulting free kick went just wide as Chris Bolder’s side battled on until half-time.
Ferriby, led in part by impressive performances from Josh Whiteley and Macauley Snelgrove, continued to fight after the break. They were defending well, but unfortunately Danny East was caught in possession on his 100th appearance for the club and Hebburn took the opportunity.
Martin crossed on the right flank and Purewal was there to meet it to give the north-east club the lead. Five minutes later, they doubled that advantage as Martin got on the scoresheet after a scrappy piece of play.
Hebburn then saw the game out to ensure their grip on the top of the table, moving ahead of Belper Town. Ferriby, meanwhile, remain in seventh spot but still have games in hand on those above them.
