Match Report

Carlton Town VS North Ferriby

By Sam Shepherd

North Ferriby FC came from behind to pick up their second league win of the season thanks to the second half brace from Danny Earl. After a goalless first half the Villagers fell behind early in the second half but two well worked goals finished by Earl saw Chris Bolder’s side bounce back from Tuesday’s defeat to Belper.

The first half was a tight affair with both sides battling to gain the ascendancy. Tom Corner had a shot easily saved in the first minute of the game while the home side also had some bright moments with Niall Hylton shooting over the bar early on.

Hylton was involved again in the 33rd minute when he challenged Tom Jackson as he looked to clear a back pass, Carlton claimed a penalty as the pair came together but the referee was unmoved.

Lamin Manneh fired over the bar for Carlton and Amir Berchil saw a low cross just cleared away for a corner towards the end of the first half and that was as close as either team came to a goal in the first half.

After a cagey first half the home side took the lead 5 minutes into the second period. They won a free kick on the right and Greg Tempest hit a speculative shot goalwards, the ball appeared to go through the hands of Tom Jackson and into the net.

After such a frustrating moment Ferriby didn’t let it get to them and grew into the game. They pushed forward and began to look dangerous. Danny Earl saw a low shot saved but he wouldn’t have to wait long to get on the scoresheet.

Just after the hour mark Tom Claisse hit a pin point diagonal ball into the box to Tom Corner, the striker headed back across goal and Earl was there to head home the equaliser.

This was a huge moment in the game with Ferriby now level but Carlton almost hit back instantly. Less than a minute after Earl’s goal Musa Jawara saw a fierce shot from the edge of the box tipped over the bar by Jackson.

This was a warning sign for Ferriby and they responded well. 5 minutes later they took the lead with a brilliantly worked goal. Josh Dennett sent a long throw down the left hand side and Danny East did well to head it down to Tom Corner. Corner found Earl with a neat pass. Earl picked up the ball six yards out, stopped and then cut inside his marker before slotting past Felix Annan in the Carlton goal. Ferriby now led thanks to two quality pieces of play.

The Villagers managed the final period of the game well but Carlton did have a couple of chances to equalise but saves from Jackson and two great last ditch blocks from Jack Johnson denied them. As tempers flared in stoppage time Bolder’s side kept their cool and held on for an important away win.

This will be a big confidence boost for Ferriby as they look to make it a great bank holiday weekend when they welcome Cleethorpes Town to the Dransfield Stadium on Monday afternoon.
