North Ferriby VS Worsborough Bridge Athletic

North Ferriby 6, Worsborough Bridge Athletic 1

Mark Chestney at the Dransfield Stadium

North Ferriby are up to second in the Northern Counties East League Division One with a resounding 6-1 hammering of Worsborough Bridge Athletic at the Dransfield Stadium on Saturday. The Villagers led 5-0 at half-time with Athletic hampered by the 25th minute dismissal of centre back Lewis O’Connor for a malicious challenge on Louis Kirk.

As usual Ferriby hit the ground running creating early chances as they do in every game but the first half of this game saw everything come together. They totally dominated will all eleven players heavily involved and the visitors at times chasing shadows or fouling the home side, much to their frustration.

Early on O’Connor was walking a fine line when he took out man of the match Levi Tarbotton with a heavy challenge and with the initial free kick cleared the first goal arrived. Danny Emerton’s initial cross was cleared but his second one found the head of skipper Danny East who headed home from close range.

The 21st minute saw the lead doubled when Matty Plummer played a great through ball to Ben Leyland but his cross was turned away for a corner. Emerton took this for Tarbotton’s far post header to be poked home by Shortland past the despairing Athletic defence.

O’Connor’s frustration spilled over four minutes when he clattered into Louis Kirk and was given a red card for the challenge to see his side down to ten men. They were immediately punished when the Jamie Forrester free kick was spilled by Athletic keeper Ross Pritchard leaving striker Tom Corner to poke the ball home for 3-0.

Further punishment ensued to the visitors when eight minutes later it was 4-0 as Forrester sent in a great cross and although it looked to have gone straight in it was given as an Elliot Wilson own goal. The pressure continued and as half-time approached a corner was won and with a mix up in the defence Shortland headed home for a 5-0 half-time lead.

Eight minutes into the second half Worsborough managed to pull a goal back, with Ferriby’s help, as for once they were left wanting in defence. Substitute Harley Holt was put through but the ball looked to come off Tarbotton to give the visitors a minute lifeline.

Worsborough were now in damage limitation mode against a side who are still unbeaten in their first eleven games of the season. With nine minutes to go Ferriby pushed hard with Danny Butts cross seeing Tom Corner’s header saved but when Matty Plummer powered in a shot which was parried by Pritchard leaving corner to tap the ball home.
