Swallownest VS North Ferriby

Swallownest 2, North Ferriby 3

By Mark Chestney

North Ferriby made it four wins in a row to maintain their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought victory at Swallownest on Saturday. The Villagers were on top in the first half but an own goal and scrambled effort in the second half made the game a closer call then it should have been.

Once again Ferriby hit the ground running and were 2-0 up inside the first eleven minutes with goals from Tom Corner and Danny East. They also had a Danny Buttle penalty saved midway through the half so they could have been all but home at 3-0 but to settle for a 2-0 half-time score line.

Swallownest had an early attack but with six minutes gone and on the back of a long throw the ball was crossed by Buttle for Corner to be on hand to head the ball home from close range. Five minutes later the Villagers were 2-0 up when a cross from the right went over the defence for East to twist his way past a defender and slide the ball home.

The home side created their first real chance on 25 minutes when debutante Callum Riley won the ball in Ferriby territory and he set up Jack Appleyard. The striker was halted by great defending and from the resultant corner his shot was well saved by Jordan Douglas.

Two minutes later the visitors could have made it 3-0 when the ball was again launched into the box and the referee seemingly saw a nudge on a Ferriby player. Buttle stepped up to take the penalty but it was well saved by Swallownest keeper Owen Evans as the visitors went in at the break with a two goal lead.

With 59 minutes gone the home side pulled a goal back when they picked up the ball in midfield and worked it through to James Woodhouse. The winger cut the ball inside but it came off the boot of Levi Tarbotton and past the helpless Douglas in the Ferriby goal.

A minute after the own goal Swallownest had a penalty shout of their own when substitute Jay Short went through along with a Ferriby defender. Douglas came out and collided with Short but the referee deemed the ball had already goen through and turned down the claim.

On 78 minutes Ferriby restored their two goal lead when there was an overlap down the right and Josh Dennett played the ball across to Harvey Carew. The substitute fired the ball home for 3-1 and then Jamie Forrester tried to add another but his cheeky chip didn’t come off in trying to beat the keeper.

Swallownest were not going to go away as they reduced the deficit when a corner was swung in and Alfie Smith headed the ball goalward. It was stopped on the line but Smith was there to smash the ball home with five minutes to go and set up a tense finish but Ferriby held on for the win.
