Grimsby Borough VS North Ferriby

Grimsby Borough 2, North Ferriby FC 3

The Villagers’ pre season campaign continued in midweek with a short journey over the River Humber to face NCEL Premier Division side Grimsby Borough. The Villagers battled their way to an impressive 3-2 win at The Bradley Football development centre.

The opening of the game followed the trend of the previous friendlies as both sides battled away in the midfield and both defences strong. It was a great victory for Chris Bolder’s side with his only criticism, like most manager’s was the giving away of goals.

“There were plenty of goals and I thought we were outstanding from start to finish,” said a delighted Bolder.

“Our patterns of play were what we have been working on and it was good to see all the players have fantastic energy levels. It was also great to see the players who came on made an impact as well.

“Other then being a little critical about conceding the goals, which all manager’s do, it was a good nights work for us. We are asking for high energy, lots of movement and the lads are doing that in covering a lot of ground.”

Ferriby started to get a foothold on the game and Tom Corner had the games’ first effort. A shot by the Ferriby striker was deflected by a Grimsby defender and spilt by Liam Higton in the host’s goal. Grimsby Borough replied with an effort of their own, after good work from Reece York who had evaded two Ferriby players he found Daniel Trott who saw his attempt deflected wide.

It took until 25 minutes for the deadlock to be broken by the hosts. After a defensive mix up Jack Bradbury took on several Ferriby defenders and placed a powerful strike into the top corner of the near post of Jordan Douglas.

After this setback, the Villagers started to get a foothold on the game. Firstly, after brilliant work from the impressive Liam Nelthorpe on the right-hand side, a cross from the right back found the head of Tom Corner but his header went wide of the host’s goal.

Eddie Rogerson had a great chance just five minutes later. The midfielder found himself in space in the Grimsby area but saw his effort go wide. The final attempt of the Villagers before the interval was from the outstanding Tom Corner. Ben Leyland put in a cross and Corner saw his header go just over the host’s goal.

At half time the Villagers made a change. Matty Plummer came on for Levi Tarbootton. The substitute thoroughly impressed with his performance in the second half. The Villagers started brightly and had the first attempt of the half through Liam Nelthorpe.

The full back found himself on the end of a Danny Buttle cross but fired his attempt over the bar. Matty Plummer had the next attempt on goal. Liam’s Nelthorpe’s free kick found the centre half but his header went agonisingly wide.

Ferriby got their reward for all their great play when Eddie Rogerson scored an outstanding goal. The midfielder took the ball down from high with a phenomenal touch to set himself up for a volley which found its way into the back of net. The former Grimsby Borough man nearly doubled his tally against his former club a few minutes later. An effort from six yards out went over the bar.

The hosts retook the lead after 75 minutes. A foul gave Grimsby a free kick in a good area with the ball crossed into the area and met by Darwood, who headed past Jordan Douglas. However, the game was level just two minutes later. An exceptional delivery from a free kick by substitute Jamie Forrester evaded everyone apart from Levi Tarbotton who managed to send the ball into the Grimsby net.

Forrester was at the centre of the action again as the Villagers went 3-2 up. The referee penalised a Grimsby defender for a handball and the substitute stepped up and placed an unstoppable penalty into the goal.

This was an impressive performance by the Villagers against a tough opponent on the road. Tom Corner impressed with his link up play up top as did Liam Nelthorpe on the right side of defence plus an Eddie Rogerson world class effort.

Meanwhile Bolder has added to his squad with the announcement of the signings of trialists Harry Fenton (17) and Rinalds Jurkstis (19), both of whom have impressed during pre-season games and training.
